now before you all laugh, dude ranch was one of the first albums i ever listened to. i'd play this song over and over. this was before my first boyfriend and before i even knew what it was like to kiss a boy. i could relate to the whole wanting someone unattainable thing. what teenage girl didn't constantly daydream about things they couldn't have? also, i still defend dude ranch as a really good album. it's not my fault they decided to suck afterward.

i remember awhile back i kept seeing these really cool mix cds on flickr and they led me to andrea and her blog. i started following her blog and twitter and it was true e-love at first sight. i've always wanted to have some sort of project on here and andrea came up with something that related to music which was perfect. every wednesday we will post a photo and song that is related to the word we have chosen for that week.

went to see bass drum of death in april. i got completely trashed during that show on purpose because i was trying to be oblivious to a completely awkward situation which i won't get into, but whatever. i ended up forgetting how to look through a viewfinder apparently and i ended up with a bunch of torsos so i'm only posting the ones i didn't fuck up. lesson learned.

so i finally caved and joined the e-reader world. i have a giant collection of books and one of the things i love about them is their covers. also, i love how as you read the left side gets heavier with each page you turn. a lot of people say e-readers are evil and maybe they are, but once i started thinking about it, what's the difference between my kindle and my ipod? another thing i discovered is how easy it is to read the kindle while you're lying in bed. i read all the time, but no matter what happens, if i haven't done much reading during the day i always read before bedtime. with real books my hand would always cramp up eventually mostly because i was already getting ready to pass out. i could live with that, but having the kindle is so much easier. i can just hold it up with one hand and flip the pages with the same hand. in fact, i like it so much that i want to read everything on it. another reason i decided on the kindle is because honestly, i don't have more room for books. i really think people are just scared of technology. people thought the internet would kill the music industry and the opposite has happened. in fact, i've actually read more since i got the kindle. so maybe the kindle and amazon are evil, i don't really know. all i know is that i don't see why i can't read actual books and still read e-books.

the immortal life of henrietta lacks is about a woman whose cells never died. i learned a lot about cells as well as about her family, but somehow, all of it was interesting to read. it wasn't like i was reading a boring textbook with a bunch of scientific terms i couldn't understand. you really get invested in the characters too. this is one of the most unique books i've read in a long time and i've been recommending it to everyone.

room is about a 5-year-old boy named jack who lives inside of a small enclosed room with his mother. he has never seen the outside world, and doesn't even know it exists in a sense. he imagines it as outer space. it's a pretty disturbing book, but i was hooked the entire way through. people have criticized the author's portrayal of jack because they don't get how a kid can say a "big word" one minute and speak in the wrong tense the next. i've met lots of children and taken care of them in the past and i think her portrayal is dead on. i don't think the book would have had the same emotional impact if it wasn't narrated by a little kid.

as promised here's another scan of an old photo i found in my mom's photo album. the dude in the photo is my dad. those are some pretty badass pants. for some reason i can't fall asleep tonight. i've been going to bed relatively early lately, but my mind just keeps wandering. i've read a few really good books lately that i'll post about soon. currently i'm re-reading to kill a mockingbird and it's better than i remembered. whenever i give someone a gift and i see them carrying it or using it, it immediately makes me happy. i like to think that whenever they look at it, they think about me. even if it's just for a brief second. then i hope that they realize how much they mean to me. in other news, i'm addicted to that sister wives show. also, i think i'm going to resurrect the term "mega babe" because seriously, it needs to make a comeback.

so i finally got around to testing out the holga 135 i got for my birthday. i'm not sure if the shutter is messed up though because out of 24 photos only around 10 came out. the rest were blank frames. i was checking the camera and it seemed the shutter wasn't opening properly if i didn't press the shutter release super hard. i think it's too late to get a replacement so hopefully it'll be ok from now on.

i've been finding a lot of old pictures. stuff i've shot myself and old family photos. i think i'll start scanning a few of them from now on. i really have no idea how to blog. i go to lots of shows and go crazy every other weekend, but half the time i don't document anything. sometimes pulling out a camera just slows down the fun in a way. if i'm tanked at a show sweating my ass off and enjoying some rock and roll i don't really feel like getting my camera out. sometimes i do. anyway, i remember taking this my second year of college. it was our introduction to color film so our instructor just told us to take pictures of whatever we wanted and get them printed at walgreens or whatever. at the time i hated this, but now i sort of like it a lot. all the containers and things seem so perfectly aligned. like the scene was staged. in actuality it was just my mom rinsing off some meat in the sink. i'm not sure what type of meat it was. so in an effort to post more often, i think scanning old photos seems like a good idea. better than not having any ideas i suppose.

i've been super behind on mail lately, but after watching this movie i've decided to catch up even if i'm broke. it reminded me of how good it feels to put a package together for someone. this was one of the best movies i've seen in a long time. it's about two unlikely pen pals that become friends and maintain that friendship for years. even though the film is heartbreaking at times, it's really funny as well. the story is told so well that i didn't find myself getting distracted at all which is rare because i seriously have adhd when it comes to movies. maybe i just have adhd. the point is, you need to watch this movie if you haven't already.

my best friend's birthday was this saturday and i decided that in addition to a store-bought gift, i'd make him something too. because once you turn 80 you really need some extra cheering up. i made three mix cds filled with songs that remind me of a particular memory. i wrote a little bit about why i picked each song and stuffed it in his card.

when i first watched die hard i screamed "officer winslow" when he popped up. he will always be officer carl winslow to me. inside the package is some video game called bioshock 2? i'm now really down with video games. i like them, but they hate me.

i tried making the covers manly, but even though i'm extremely manly myself, i don't know how to craft in a manly way. maybe next time i can glue nails on some wood or something? my favorite is the cat though. especially with the little bow. everyone at the bar was like, lolz. also, there are some hilarious song choices, but like i said, each song has a story behind it.

i made the card using cutouts from frankie magazine. the cake says happy birthday bea which i thought was amusing since he acts like an old lady and old ladies are always named bea.

he likes ramen and fried chicken. the rats are supposed to be us. cause you know, best friends forever!

this was taken the day after the blizzard hit. i love his sombrero. we got around 20.2 inches of snow, but it wasn't enough to beat the record set in 1967 or even the one in 1999 which sucked. recently i started to read the twilight books. i have a bet going that i can make it through all four books no matter what. however, after book two i'm starting to wonder if i'll make it. at this point what keeps me going is mostly teh lulz. i know a lot of people like twilight and that's cool. i just can't enjoy a book that spends like 400 pages talking about how lyke totally hawt this one guy is, every other sentence. i have other issues with it, but i'm not about to write an essay. i also took the goodreads reading challenge and am trying to read at least 50 books this year. if you'd like to join the reading challenge, click here.

so i started the 365 project at the beginning of the year. i have a terrible memory and have had a few close calls, but luckily i have yet to forget to take a picture each day. here are a few:

i took all of these with my cell phone and used the vignette app. using my cell phone is so much easier than always whipping out my crappy point and shoot digital camera even if i do still carry it around just in case. i love film obviously, but there is no way i could afford to do this with film.

i've decided to compile a short list of simple things that cheer me up when i'm sick or bored:

- painting my nails a bright color like orange. yesterday on a whim i stopped by walgreens and bought some. it reminds me of sorbet.

- making and receiving mix cds.

- being completely engrossed in a book.

- browsing etsy for craft supplies. the picture above was taken after i tested out the new rubber stamp set i bought.

- doing something unexpected and nice for someone. it might sound cheesy, but it's true. something as simple as a compliment can make someone's day.

this is how i spend/used to spend my days. well the good ones anyway. minus the shark masks and the guitars (only cause i don't have either of these things). i can't ride a bike, but i can sure as hell ride my barbie scooter. when i was a kid i used to get into fights with my neighbors. one time my friend punched me on the nose and it started gushing everywhere. my mom almost fainted. like seriously gushing. i almost passed out. i used to love to pull out my loose teeth when new ones were coming in and show my mom a sink full of blood. it's been a year since jay reatard died. i've never been affected by the death of a person i never formally met in my entire life the way i've been affected by his. i'm sure people think it's stupid and i myself can't understand why, but ever since he died, i get a lump in my throat when i think about it. maybe it was because i knew about his background and in a way i looked up to him. i always thought he was exceptionally talented in an effortless way. he was just a normal dude. misunderstood at times, a little fucked up, but with a heart of gold underneath it all. i guess i'm also sad that he'll never play another show or put out more music. i'm excited to hear the stuff he had been working on though. the worst part with anyone dying is that you know they left behind a bunch of people that have to figure out how to deal with it.

so i recently got to upgrade my cellphone and it was completely free which ruled because i'm broke. i've had the same phone for about two years or so and usually that wouldn't matter, but it was falling apart. the charging port was fucked or something because the only way the battery would charge was if i put pressure on the usb cord. so either i had to hold it like a rube, or balance it upright on something so it would charge. GHETTO. anyway, i got an LG vortex and i can't complain since it was one of the only free phones. i actually think it's rather nice to be considered a budget phone, but whatever. the best part? now i can download applications like everyone else and the first apps i looked for were photo related ones. i found this app called vignette which produces pretty nice looking pictures. some options include toy cameras and SX-70s and a bunch of other filters and effects. i downloaded the free demo, but i loved it so much that i bought the actual app. now i'm glued to my phone even more than before. the following pictures were all taken with the LG vortex and edited with the vignette app. there's even a flickr group for it. also, i'm addicted to angry birds. now that verizon is offering the iphone i'm definitely going to be making out with my phone constantly.

the first picture is supposed to be an owl that i made for carly who by the way, started a new blog that you should start following. there aren't many posts yet, but i'm sure it's going to be as awesome as her old blog. it doesn't look much like an owl, but it's the thought that counts! then we have a picture of me in my outerwear and my cat looking cute as usual. i've always wanted to go into that restaurant, but i never have. my bff was complaining about how cold it was and he kept yelling at me to put my phone away so we could walk faster. i always take pictures of alleys. something about the lights in alleys always gets my attention. then we have my friend's cat, gimli. i call him gimmles. he's the sweetest cat ever. i waste lots of time online obviously. i was at the library and i noticed this cover which i had never seen before. i love book covers. i wish they sold huge posters of book covers because i'd totally put them up. and last we have a pair of gloves i bought at target for $1. they were in the children's section but since i have midget hands, they fit perfectly.

it's like crack! i love my new phone. i even named it professor higginbotham. ok, so i name all my electronics and cameras, but whatever. speaking of love, i love that one of my diana mini shots was posted over on the diana mini love blog. freaking awesome.

this year has been pretty harsh. i mean some really awesome things have happened like my trip to memphis, but for some reason a lot of negative crap has also happened. i joke about being miserable often, but this was the first year in ages when i sort of felt my optimism fading. usually xmas is my favorite time of year. well it starts in october since i also love fall and halloween. this year i still haven't even sent out xmas cards and i was only able to afford a few gifts. i actually got more gifts than i gave. that made me feel more like crap than anything really. luckily the year is almost over. really i have nothing to complain about compared to most people, but i'm surprised at how much i've let this year get to me.

i spent xmas with my best friend and it was pretty fun. i missed our movie nights. usually we cook, but this year we're like fuck everything. we decided to order chinese which was much harder than we assumed it would be. i called the chinese place before the 25th to make sure they'd be open and they said they would be. so we're starving and we decide to call and order our food. THE PLACE IS CLOSED. so we end up trying to find a non-shitty chinese place that's open. we spent about an hour or two looking up restaurants and calling them. once place even hung up after saying "we're too busy call in 30 minutes." finally we found a place. the food was decent so i think we got lucky. we finished up season 2 of the misfits and then we watched the tim burton batman movie. i prefer batman returns, but the second half of the movie was pretty good. i just get bored easily it seems.

one of the most thoughtful gifts i received was one of these diaries in brown. i'm completely in love with it.

now, i'm not intending to offend anyone. i couldn't think of any good celebrities so i decided to pick jesus. it was more of a joke because while i'm not religious i've always had a feeling jesus plays guitar or something on account of the superpowers. i'd probably party with him if he was around. usually i find the douchebags my mom hangs out with far more annoying than jesus. i mean, i never met the guy. the main reason i posted this page was because i loved the part about being unaware that someone you wish loved you, actually does love you. i'm always daydreaming about pointless crap like that. stuff like that is always exciting if you think about it.
